Clifton’s Firefighters Partner with the American Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms

Members from the Firefighter’s Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA) Local 21 teamed up with volunteers from the American Red Cross on Sunday, October 16, 2016, to install smoke alarms in the homes of Clifton residents as part of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. Over a dozen members from each agency worked together to install 175 free smoke alarms in over 60 residences throughout Clifton.

FMBA Local 21 provided the installers for the smoke alarms while the American Red Cross members provided fire safety education materials to the residents. The smoke alarms were provided to the American Red Cross by the Kidde Corporation free-of-charge.

The aim of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign is to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries in the U.S. by 25% by 2020. The City of Clifton was identified by the American Red Cross as one of the top-ten zip codes in NJ for fire-related death and injuries.

This is the second year that FMBA Local 21 members partnered with the American Red Cross to install smoke alarms in Clifton residences. In 2015, over 500 smoke alarms were installed. This year’s installation was scheduled to correspond with Fire Prevention Week, which ran from October 9 – 15, 2016.
On average, seven people die and 36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every day in the U.S. Clifton residents are urged to test their smoke alarms monthly and to develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
